At Plus Group, we believe that our people are what make us different. When Instrumentation and Controls Engineer, Deepa Patel, joined our Atlanta office, we knew she would be a natural fit with her infectious work ethic, technical talent, and commitment to client satisfaction. From the beginning, Deepa has been passionate about designing and instrumentation with 15 years of industry experience in research and development, electronics, and instrumentation.

Deepa obtained her B.Sc. in Physics and M.Sc. in Applied Physics from the Maharaja Sayajirao University, India, and holds a Diploma in Instrumentation Engineering Technology from Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), Alberta. She is also a licensed Project Manager with a wide breadth of control systems knowledge, including calibration, installation, plant commissioning, maintenance, integration, and instrumentation design. We recently sat down with Deepa and discussed her career and personal experience working for Plus Group. She answered:

Process Plus is a very professional firm! People are amazing to work with! 😊 Working in an organization which is in business for 25 years is an honor! Working in such a great organization gives me satisfaction and, I can easily maintain the work-life balance, which is a key thing for any employee.

What does a Typical Day look like for you?

For me, a typical day is most of my time spent on instrument specifications, IO list, instrument list, updating P&IDs and verifying them, sizing instruments, etc. The remaining time would be in training and researching or collaborating with a team member to get the work done efficiently.

What advice do you have for current Students?

I would say get the technical education you will need to build your career and engage in the activities that develop your management skills and communication skills, which is very important in any career you will go in the future. Also, on the technical side, try to learn as many things as you can. Technology is constantly upgrading but having that base knowledge makes you proficient in learning new technology in the future. Your seniors (where you work!) could be great teachers for your field. They have a lot more experience in their field, and you can grasp tons of skills from their oversights and accomplishments as per my experience.

Challenges come in everyone’s life, but overcoming those challenges makes you stronger! I am trying out these simple steps when I feel I am in a stressful situation:

  • Try to see the issue from all sides.
  • Brainstorm possible solution
  • Make a list of positive and negative sides of the solution you think are relevant.
  • Relax and take a deep breath.
  • Choose a solution to try out first.
  • Break the solution down into small parts to see how your plan would work.
  • Act and start with the first step in your process.

What makes you great at your job?

Having industry experience in research and development, electronics, and instrumentation, I have technical knowledge of how the instrument work, and designing them for the project accelerates my skills. Communication and leadership are the keys to any work environment!
